The Conversational English Program

Make a difference in just one hour per week.

  • The Conversational English Program matches volunteers with newcomers for weekly English conversation. Conversations can take place virtually or in-person (public places like coffee shops or libraries).

We ask for a minimum of 1 hour per week commitment for six months after being matched with an English learner. Volunteers facilitate conversations with the learner, providing encouragement, feedback, and guidance toward the learner’s goals. The learner might ask questions about the English language, living and working in Canada, meeting with their children’s teachers, attending a social or community event, or speaking with colleagues. You will also assist the learner in setting and working toward their goals.

Your meetings could include assigning homework, creating short lessons, watching videos, reading short stories, or taking turns with “show and tell.”

The Conversational English Program aims to:

    • Connect newcomers with a welcoming member of their community,

    • Provide one-on-one English support in a comfortable environment,

    • Encourage confidence in a newcomer’s English language abilities,

    • Promote goal setting and motivation toward achieving goals, and

    • Provide professional and supportive volunteer experiences.

  • Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and meet the following requirements:

    • Be fluent in written and spoken English.

    • Have graduated high school (or equivalent.)

    • Have respect for people of diverse cultures.

    • Have strong listening and interpersonal skills.

    • Be familiar with online video software and able to arrange a meeting (if volunteering virtually.)

    • Be committed to volunteering 1-2 hours per week for at least six months.

    • Be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from the local police services.

    1. Fill out an application form and click submit.

    2. You will receive a confirmation email and then we will contact you to arrange a virtual or in-person interview.

    3. If the interview is successful, we will require a Vulnerable Sector Check, a personal reference, and a professional reference. We will provide you with orientation and training materials.

    4. You will then be matched with an English learner for six months.

If you have any questions, please call 519-208-9581 or email volunteer@kwmulticultural.ca.
