CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH PROGRAM
Pat, a dedicated volunteer at the KW Multicultural Centre, first connected with a Syrian refugee in 2016 through the Conversational English Program. This program was crucial for the refugee, who needed to improve his English skills to find employment and integrate into Canadian society.
Pat's approach went beyond language lessons. Recognizing the immediate need for employment, she and her learner drove around filling out job applications until he landed his first job at Canadian Tire. Over the years, their bond strengthened. In fact, they are still friends after eight years. When Tera, the volunteer coordinator, spoke to Pat, she was going to be hosting a baby shower for his family the next day.
Pat provided unwavering support, guiding him through his educational journey, which led to an undergraduate degree and dentistry school. Her encouragement was a constant, and she celebrated his achievements, including a silver medal for academic excellence. The outcomes of Pat's support were transformative. Her learner not only succeeded in finding a job but also excelled academically and professionally. This success story exemplifies the profound impact of dedicated volunteer support in the settlement process.
Pat's next match met with her a few times at a coffee shop before moving to Mississauga. Despite the distance, Pat remains in contact with this learner, emailing twice a year to stay updated on each other's lives. Reflecting on her experience, Pat shared, "It's really rewarding for me to have helped him to this point, and I know he and his family are grateful."
Juan accessed the Conversational English Program during his settlement journey. He needed support with improving his English and was looking for real-world help outside of a classroom.
Cam, signed up to volunteer in the Conversational English Program in February 2018, but his journey began long before with his own experience immigrating to Canada as a young person. Cam was inspired to help others facing similar challenges he experienced. Cam and Juan were matched together in March 2018 and the two have been connected ever since. Cam described their meetings as going far beyond English support, and that it's not uncommon for their two families to get together regularly.
The outcomes of this relationship have been remarkable. Cam has watched as Juan and his wife settled deeper into their new life in Canada. In addition to improving his English, Juan has started his own business and bought his first home in Canada. Cam warmly described the accomplishments that Juan and his wife has achieved and it's obvious that Cam's support and encouragement have played an integral part in Juan's family's successful settlement in Canada.
